“Kardam” is a shortened version of Kardamyla, which is a small town on the northeastern shore of the Greek Island of Chios. The island claims to be the homeland of Homer who mentions Kardamyla in the Iliad. The island has a long and interesting history as a seafarers’ haven because of its location in the isthmus opposite Smyrna, Turkey - one of the western ends of the Silk Road. Over the centuries, many refugees have crossed this isthmus — in both directions. All four of the managing director’s grandparents and one of his parents, a refugee, were born in Kardamyla, Chios.
